Reading Time: 10 minutes

Despite being Sunday, Vikas was out in the market in the evening. He was looking for some apparels suitable for his trip abroad. He bumped into Ramesh. They were meeting after few weeks.

“Hey, Ramesh, How are you? What brings you here?”

“Arey, I am looking for a nice shawl. Do you remember Satpute Sir?  His 75th birthday is on 5th of next month. The other day some of my classmates got together and they are planning to present him a good shawl on Guru Paurnima Day. I was given the responsibility to select the shawl. So I am on that mission. Anyway, how are things? Just two days ago, I met Ajay. He is getting married, sometime after 3-4 months. And do you know, Ravichandran is opening his clinic. He is planning to invite all of us, his friends. That is scheduled on third of coming month. Some auspicious day.”

“Great! Ravi had a terrific struggle. He is a gold medalist but it was so difficult for him to get started. One has to learn tenacity from him. He overcame all odds.

But did you hear, Nitin is going strong with his affair.  He is going to talk to Savita’a parents to finalize.” Vikas updated Ramesh on news front of friend circle.

The gossip was going on in full swing. While wandering around, Ramesh’s eyes caught the sight of Satish approaching them. Immediately he interrupted his chatting and said “Vikas, I remembered I have to do some important work. I must leave now.  Okay then. We will meet some time later”. He started off. Before he could go far, Satish reached them. “Hi, how come two of you are here?”

“Hi Satish. I have some work. I have to push off urgently. Bye then.” Ramesh left hurriedly. Vikas was wondering what made Ramesh leave him so suddenly, interrupting the dialogue. Satish also was surprised that Ramesh left so quickly. He did not wait even for a minute to talk to him. Little disappointed, Satish started talking to Vikas.

“Tell me Vikas, how are you doing?”

“I am fine. How about you?”

“I am also good. But do you know Vikas, these days in the free time I have started writing stories. It is really very interesting. One gets opportunity to express his ideas, feelings. That is a nice way to empty out your mind.”

“Yes. Very good.”  Vikas appreciated Satish’s taking some different line for recreation.

“Vikas, I choose different storylines. You see. I am not a professional writer. So I need some truthful feedback, honest opinion from my friends. Depending upon that, I do some alterations. That adds to my writing methods. “After a pause for a while, Satish asked Vikas ”Can you spare few minutes, may be ten or fifteen, and read my story ? It is not that bad.”

“Why not? That will be my pleasure. But Satish, I am not a voracious reader. I will take some time. Will it be okay? I would like to give you genuine comments.”

Vikas saw Satish was delighted with this response.

With a great satisfaction on his face, Satish said, “Okay Vikas, I will send you the story by email. I have your mail address. I am looking forward to your candid feedback.”

Vikas said, “Sure. “

Satish then said “Vikas, thank you so much. Now I will move on. I was actually going to buy some vegetables. I saw you with Ramesh. So I turned around and came here. I have given my story to Ramesh for his feedback.  A month has passed but he has not given me his comments. May be he is very busy. But my story does not take even half an hour to read. Anyway, Vikas, at least you be kind enough to give your opinion.”

“Definitely, Satish. I will give you feed back within a week.”

“Thank you so much, Vikas. Thanks again. Wait for my story before late evening.” With happiness on his face Satish left.

Vikas got the answer for his curiosity about Ramesh leaving abruptly the discussion with him. Ramesh wanted to avoid talking to Satish as he had nothing to say about the story which Satish had sent him some weeks back.

Vikas entered the shop and started looking for the readymade shirt for his trip to Singapore. He had specific color and style in his mind. Nothing in the shop was satisfying his requirement. He was wondering what to do. And there was Ashish at the next counter also selecting some shirt. Both looked at each other almost at the same time.

“Hi, Vikas. Have you finished making your selection? If yes, come here. Please help me. I am undecided between full shirt and half shirt.” Ashish urged.

“No. I am also not able to finalize. I heard you have started looking for a match? How far have you reached?”

Ashish came close and said “I liked one girl and my parents are talking further with that party.  If both parents agree, it will be final.”

“What about girl’s choice? Has she approved?”

“Why, am I so unworthy that she will not like me?”

“No yaar! I did not mean that. But every girl also has her own ideas. The boy may or may not fit in it.”

“We both had some time together. We exchanged our ideas. There are more common things than differences. We both have given our approval. Now, it is up to our parents to finalize. Today evening only they are meeting. “

“Good. That means very soon we are going to get the great news.”

“Probably yes!  Do you know, Nitin is going to Savita’s house today only to finalize the matter. That news may reach you earlier.” Ashish parted some more information.

“And do you know, I am going to Singapore for six months for some training program. No. I am not learning anything new. But we are teaching them about our product using new technology. They are using our product for last so many years.  But the technological advances has changed the product operation completely. So we two Engineers from our company are going to install the entire system and train their Engineers thoroughly.

I met Satish a while ago. And do you know, in spite of his new promotion as manager in charge of a project, he is spending some time to write stories.  Great!  An Engineer by profession wants to become a writer. Very funny!” Vikas added.

“So you came across Satish. Arey, last time we met, he mentioned about his new passion for writing short stories. He did not stop at that. He asked for my feedback over his stories. But who has that much time to read his story?”

“Yes. Very true! We don’t get time even to scratch. And how can one read his stories!” Vikas agreed with Ashish.

“He sent his story on email and asked for his feedback within a week”

“He is going to post the short story on my email too, for feedback.”

“I am not in any mood to read his story. I bluffed him as my mother is interested in reading it first and after she finishes it, I will read it. Promptly, next week he asked for comments. Told him mother has not finished it yet. After she is through with it, I promise, I will read it immediately.

Then on, I am avoiding meeting him. He is a great Engineer and our very good friend too. But why this punishment of reading the story?”

“Anyway, you finish your selection of shirt first. Then we will talk about it.”

They both picked up their choice and proceeded towards a restaurant nearby. Both ordered for sandwiches and lassi and had nice time together.

After they finished when they came out they bumped into Mohan.

“How are you both?” Mohan greeted them.

“Ay, I have to leave now. Have to keep an appointment. We will meet sometime later, Mohan” Ashish said and started off.

“Hey, wait. I do not have any story to give you to read. And Satish is also not around here. You don’t have to leave immediately, Ashish.”

“So you also have experienced the menace Satish is spreading. “ Ashish said. Holding Ashish’s arm Mohan did not allow him to leave.

Mohan continuesd further. “And do you know, Satish is great. Few days back he came to my house. I was not at home. Mother entertained him.

‘Aunti, actually, I had come to read out my short story to Mohan.’
‘ Very good Satish, writing short story is your pass time. Nice.’ Mother.

‘Aunti, would you like to hear it? Shall I read it out to you quickly?’ Satish.

‘Yes. I would have liked to hear it but don’t have  time. I have to start cooking ’ mother.

‘Ok, Then. Some time later, aunty!’ saying this Satish left.

My mother had heaved a sigh of relief. Actually, she had finished her cooking. But to circumvent the anguish of hearing the story, she pretended to cook something. She started making bhajia’s . And when I returned home after sometime, I heard mother’s story how she saved herself from Satish’s trauma by taking up making bhajia’s .

Next time when Satish visited our house, my mother escaped to kitchen to make Batata Vadas. She had thought there is no problem worse than listening to Satish’s short story. So that is Satish and his stories.” Mohan completed his story in single breath.

“Really a menace! Satish is our friend trying out something different. But he can not take us as guinea pigs,” Vikas  remarked.

Shopping was over and Vikas, Ashish & Mohan returned to their respective homes.

After dinner Vikas retired to bed. As his usual practice, he opened his mail account on laptop. Satish’s mail was waiting for him.

With reluctance, he opened the short story titled “The Jackfruit”.

Vikas thought ‘What a horrible title! ’

Vikas started reading. The first line itself he found uninteresting. He went on and every further line was more and more tedious for him.  He could not read any further. He was quick enough to send his reply to Satish. With a great effort he could scribble words, “Very boring”

Then he further added, “Satish, as a friend I am suggesting, please do not waste your time in writing stories. That is not our cup of tea. We are professionally Engineers and please concentrate on technology.  Friend, please do not let your energy get drained in such non productive activity. I am sorry. I am being honest. Please stop that and don’t put your friends into awkward situation of reading your pastime outcome. It is torturous to your entire friend circle.”

Vikas sent his mail. He was getting ready to enter into dream world. Before he could close his eyes. his computer announced receipt of some mail. He noticed it was from Satish. “Okay friend. Thanks for your advice. I will keep in mind.”

Vikas could not keep himself away from sorry face of Satish in front of him.

The days passed on. On second day of next month, Vikas’s  mother told him that her distant niece, Akanksha, from Indore was coming to Mumbai as she had got job in one construction company as Chief Architect soon after her Masters in Architectures. She insisted Vikas to go to airport to receive her as that was Saturday and was weekly off for him.

On Saturday, Vikas was woken up early and promptly he was at the airport well in time. Identifying with the help of cell phone, they quickly drove back.

Vikas’s mother was very happy to receive her niece. After exchanging all the news from each other’s house, Akanksha took charge of her room allotted to her. Slowly she got acquainted with the family, Vikas, his father and mother whom she had met last summer during one family wedding.

Next day Vikas got ready to attend the small get-together of his friends to celebrate 75th birthday of their favorite teacher Satpute Sir.

“Why don’t you take Akanksha with you there? Sanyami, Rajita and Neela must be coming. Aren’t they? They all are your batch mates and usually attend any function at Satpute Sir’s house. Right?  Akanksha can get introduced to your friends. That will make her more comfortable.”

“If she is ready, I don’t have any problem.”

Akanksha was also keen to meet some girls in her age group.

At the function at Satpute Sir’s house, around 25-30 youngsters were present. Vikas introduced Akanksha to everybody and most importantly Satpute Sir.  She also intermingled with everybody. Ashish, Mohan, Satish, Ramesh, Rohit, Ajay, Sanyami, Rajita, Neela and all others were present.

After some time, Rohit got up and conducted the ceremony of felicitating Satpute Sir. Everyone was extremely happy to express one’s gratitude to their respected sir.

When Satish’s turn came, he said, “Sir and dear friends, to express my feelings towards sir, I am going to tell a micro story.”  Many of the attendees lost their heart beat. A story and from Satish. Inconceivable idea.

Mohan interrupted, “Satish, please, no story telling.”

Ashish supported Mohan. ”Yes. I also feel that it may be too much.”

“Let him tell his story. Have you forgotten, in your college days when I used to tell you stories, you all used to enjoy it. Let Satish narrate his story” Satpute sir interrupted.

“Let him tell his some experience with the factory or something on technology. But not the story please.” Vikas said.

“No Vikas. I want a story from Satish.” Sir insisted.

“OK. Go ahead Satish “Rohit took charge.

Satish got up and started.” This is really a micro story.

A gardener was looking after one small garden. It had various types of plants, some bearing flowers which looked beautiful without any fragrance. Some flowers were not very attractive but had nice aroma. Some plants did not bear any flowers. And cacti had only the thorns. But the gardener took care of all plants. Nurtured all of them with equal love and affection. And that gardener won the best Garden award for many consecutive years.

We salute that gardener with utmost humility.”

Saying this Satish touched Sir’s feet. Tears flowed from sir’s eyes, moistened Satish’s head. Controlling his own tears Satish took his seat.

Spontaneous clapping from one and all ended Satish’s story.

Rohit took over the charge again and announced further item of the function.

Akanksha was impressed by the story.  When the function was over, she approached Satish and extended her compliments for the grand story.

“It was really nice. Opening out your heart beautifully.

Do you write stories regularly?”

“Actually I am an Engineer. But during my spare time, I do write some thing.” Satish said hesitantly.

“That is still great. Usually, Technology and literature never go together. So you are exceptional.”

“What about you? Do you also write?” Satish got curious.

“Yes. I also scribble in my spare time. I am an Architect. That gives me full scope for creativity.  But jotting down your feelings is something exceptionally great. I love to read and sometimes I write too.” Satish was delighted that he found somebody who enjoyed writing as well as reading short stories. He was about to ask her feedback over the short stories he has already written. But he refrained from talking about his writing work.

Meanwhile other friends joined the conversation. “Yes. It was a very nice story, Satish. Well written.” Mohan greeted.  Then he looked at Akanksha and said,” He is a good writer.  How did you find his micro story? It was really very nice.”

“Yes. Very short but extremely sensitive. I told him I liked it.” Akanksha said.

“He is the person who has introduced we Engineers to stories. Otherwise we had not dared to write anything. It is Satish who inspired us to write.

I also have started writing occasionally.” Mohan bluffed.

“So you also write?”

“That is great. If you have something written already, I would be happy to read it” Akanksha.

“Oh! Certainly. When we meet next, I will give it to you.”

“We all have started liking short stories because of Satish. I also write occasionally.” Ashish added.

“Oh! Wonderful. That means yours is a technocrat writers group.” Akanksha.

“Yes. You can say so.” Ashish confirmed.

“Does Vikas write? “

“No. He has not picked up it as yet. He even does not read short stories given to him for reading. Absolutely insensitive person!” Ramesh interrupted.  “I will give my story for you to read. “ Ramesh tried to impress Akanksha.

“So except Vikas, each one of you has a very common pastime of writing and appreciating short stories. I would love to read you all.” Akanksha.

Satish was aghast to know his friends’ love for short stories.

He could well understand their liking for stories was actually their interest in new friend Akanksha.  His story The Gardener was not heard by friends with intent. They had not taken note of the story beyond the title. But Satish had found a genuine, sensitive reader of short stories. He thought  a new plant was added in Sir’s garden, that had beautiful flowers with great aroma.

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Satish shut down the operating system, closed the notebook and went for lunch.

“Why do you take so much time to come when you are called? The food has been arranged on the table and it gets cold by the time you start eating. What is the use of serving hot food?” mother complained.

“Aai, I wanted to complete writing one paragraph of my new story. If I break in between, the link is lost. And then it is very difficult to continue with the flow of the story.”

“Oh! Great story writer. How many stories you have written so far !  Just writing stories is not enough. It must be meaningful. It must be accepted by the literary world. Anyway. Now I have warmed the food again. So please finish your lunch first.

What time did you sleep last night? I saw lights on in your room when I got up for water at around two o’clock. What were you doing? Writing only?” mother put a question to Satish.

“Yes, Aai. I got a brilliant idea last night and I wanted to put it down immediately.”

“Satish, you have given up Engineering studies to pursue your hobby of writing short stories. You want to make a career in writing. Fine. But what have you achieved during last one year? So many stories you have written. Each friend of yours whenever he or she visits you, you force upon them your new stories. Sometimes they genuinely give you their feedback. But many times they do not find them interesting.  Satish, tell me. How many stories have you submitted to different publication houses so far? None of them ever got accepted.  Every time you submit your story, you are in high spirits. You are so sure that the new story would be published. Your mood is sustained till you receive a message from publishing house ‘this time your story is unsuccessful.’” Mother kept a glass of water near Satish.

“No. I don’t want to discourage you. But I am putting facts in front of you. You take so much efforts to write a story. So many times you rewrite them. You make your friends read them. Discuss with them. Make some changes if you find it necessary. And when you send them to publishing houses, they send you a message of rejection. I feel you are wasting your energy. It will be better if you take up a job.”

Satish was disappointed that his mother who supported him with his ideas, appreciated his creativity so long, had lost her patience.

“But this time I have a very brilliant idea. I am sure nobody has written such a marvelous story so far. Aai, this will be a story appreciated by young and old, poor and rich. Everybody. It will draw attention of one and all. You will see the result very soon.”

“Satish, I hope so. You must get recognition soon.”

Satish finished his lunch quickly. Rushed to his study room. Opened  the laptop and started typing his ideas.

In the evening, Latika, his good friend came to his house. She was close to him since their school days. She was working in a multi-national firm as an executive. She appreciated Satish’s efforts. She had faith in his creative ability. She was usually the first person to whom Satish would show his work.

As expected, Latika was given new story to read. “This is going to topple the literary world. Latika, I want you to read this story carefully and give me your feedback honestly.”  Satish pulled one chair near the laptop and opened the file to enable her to read his new creation.

“Satish, Latika has just entered the house. Let her have some water. I will make tea for her. Do not just embarrass her by making her read your new story.” Mother looked at Latika and tried to drag her into the kitchen. But Latika ignored mother and started reading the story. Satish was watching her face for the reaction. As she went on reading, Satish was getting more anxious about her feedback. Slowly Latika’s face started brightening up.  Satish could not hold his patience. He started looking out of the window to hide eager expressions on his face. After few minutes of reading, Latika turned towards Satish. “Wonderful , Satish. This is too good. Just a few suggestions. Otherwise the story is absolutely fascinating. It smoothly glides the reader till the end and finally a superb climax. Very nice. I would rate this as your finest work so far. Make the changes and send it to the publisher. They can not reject this one.”

Mother came with the tea for three of them.

“Aai, Have you read this story?” Latika asked mother while picking up her cup of tea.

“No. He does not believe us. He needs some friends like you to give feedback.” Mother remarked smilingly.

“But Aai, this is really an extra-ordinary piece of work. Just superb. Satish says this is going to create waves in literary world.” Latika said while sipping tea.

“Satish always feels that everything he writes is outstanding. But what he thinks and what the experts think do not coincide. Whatever he has written so far was disapproved by the publishers. Why do you think this time it is going to be different?” mother posed a question to Latika. Of course, she did not have any answer to this.

“You will come to know very soon. I really feel this is a great work.”

Satish was little embarrassed to hear both good and bad about his literary skills.

After making the suggested changes, Satish sent his story to one of the publishers. As the days passed by Satish was getting impatient waiting for the mail for selection of his story for publication. Two weeks passed. Satish was losing his nerves.  No communication was received.

And after three weeks a mail came. That was an intimation of disapproval. Satish was shattered. His mother was literally in tears. When Latika came to know about denial  of this story, she rushed immediately to Satish and tried to console him. Latika said, “There must be some mistake on part of publisher. This certainly deserves selection.  May be the number of stories to be selected was already over. Unfortunately, our story only had to go out. ”

“Latika, I told you, however good we might find this story, it does not match with publisher’s thinking.  So inevitable was to happen-the non acceptance.” Mother said in a dejected tone. “I feel, Satish should stop writing stories. That does not seem to be his cup of tea.” And tears flowed down mother’s eyes.

Latika said “Satish, Don’t feel bad. Anyway, we will send this story to another publisher. Let us try our luck there.”

Latika selected another publisher and made Satish send his story there. Again the waiting for the communication from the publisher was making Satish, Latika and the mother  very uneasy. As the days were passing, the hopes were dying rapidly.

And the mail came to Satish’s inbox. That was a congratulatory letter for selection of his story for publication. Satish was on cloud nine. Mother and Latika were extremely happy.

Mother thanked God and offered naivaidyam to him.

After a week Satish received yet another stunning  letter.  Another publisher had shown interest in his other short stories stating that his published short story had received raving reviews. It was in great demand. So they wanted to offer him a big amount to have rights for publishing all of his short stories in the form of a book. Some news channels gave news to the world about the phenomenal success of the short story writer. Satish had received the deserved recognition. He was a celebrity then.

Reading Time: 7 minutes
June had started. The colleges had not reopened yet. So I was at home.

It was 10-10:30 in the morning. I opened the drawer of the chest, picked up an issue of LIFE magazine and got into the easy chair. On the front page there was a picture of a new luxury liner from America. I studied its design. It was very beautiful. But the stamp of the issuing library spoiled the grace of the great ship. Meanwhile, Ramesh from the neighborhood came to the front yard to dry his clothes in the intense sunshine. He looked at me reading a magazine. “Reading some French magazine?” he asked.

“No yaar. Just because I have completed a course in French, does it mean I will be reading only French?. I am reading LIFE. The issue of this month is very good.”

“Ok. Forget it. Are you coming for a movie with me? A good picture is on for matinee show. BRIDGES AT TOKORI. William Holden is the hero. At Central cinema. Are you coming?”

I closed the magazine. Thought over it William Holden was my favorite hero. Had heard about the picture being good. I was also free. But then I realized, my wallet was completely empty. At the most one rupee may be there. There are still 8 days for father to get his salary. Till then no movie. I told Ramesh ”I have seen a movie yesterday. I don’t want to see any more immediately. Will see sometime later.” Ramesh fixed the clips on the clothes he put to dry and went back into his house. I opened the magazine and started reading. My mother called me. “Satish, bring peanuts worth 8 aanaas from the shop right away.”

“Ok. I am bringing. Should I take money from your purse?”

“My purse! It is already empty. Nobody will give you even 8 aanaas if you sell it. Take money from your wallet only.”

I was shocked. Anyway, without any further argument I went to the shop and got the peanuts. I was wondering why did we have to eat peanuts in bhaji if we do not have enough money? I opened the magazine and tried to read the article. But my mind was wandering somewhere else. “If today only money in the house is finished, how are we going to pull on the rest of the month?

But why am I worried about such a situation? This month will go as all previous months have gone. Coming months will also go the same way. No relief. One month my college fees will take a good share of father’s salary and some other month the expenses for clothing. Something or other spending. Never any month goes smoothly without tension. But how can I put all the load on father’s shoulders? Two more years to complete my graduation. Till then situation is not going to change. I must hunt for some source of money. I tried for a job during vacation. But I am not that lucky enough to get a summer placement. I must start taking tuitions for French. I must use my extra quality to earn some money.”

While thinking about money matters, with magazine in front of eyes, I dozed off without my realization. Mother’s call for lunch, woke me up. After lunch, I decided to take a walk instead of worrying  about house condition. I pulled out my out going clothes from the hanger, put them on and went out. They were not even ironed. But that being regular affair, it did not bother me.

That was hot afternoon. Not much movement on the road. I was walking on the footpath. Suddenly one luxurious Mercedes car passed by me without making any sound. I recognized, it was Seth Lilachand’s car. Seth Lilachand was a big name in our area. He was the richest man in our district. I remembered he had started some chemical factory few years back. He was an ordinary person then. But in 5-6 years he became a millionaire. No. By calling him millionaire would be insulting  him. He was a BILLIONAIRE. All the luxuries he was enjoying.  His life must be without any worries.  Can I become as rich as him? Will I own such a luxury car? Suddenly I tumbled over some stone on the road and I got pushed back into the real world from the imaginary. I saw the Mercedes returning.  But this time it did not pass by me but stopped close to me. Some person got down from the car. He came straight to me. “Sethji is calling you.” He said. I was confused. I went near the car. Sethji was relaxing in that air-conditioned car. Nice scent fragrance greeted me. Sethji moved his hand  and told me to get into the car. I was perplexed. “Why? What is the matter?” I asked.

Again he told me to sit next to him. “I have some work. “

“What?” I said.

“First come inside the car.” Saying this Shethji pulled me inside the car. I sat next to him. Not scared but surprised and felt uneasy.

The car started. I noticed the car was well decorated from within. Sethji took out some medicinal tablets and threw them in his mouth. Then he had a sip of water from his nice bottle. I was getting impatient. I again asked. ”Tell me what I can do for you.” Sethji waved his hand and said “What is the hurry? Let us first go to my house. We will relax, have some tea and biscuits. Then I will tell you how important you are for our business.”

The car stopped in front of one mansion. We got off. Somebody from house rushed towards  us. He opened an umbrella and held over Sethji’s head to protect Sethji from hot sun. We entered the house.

My God! What a lovely the living room was! Excellent furniture, nice artifacts, well positioned lamps over few great paintings. Every thing was chosen with a sense of beauty. Fully carpeted floor. A well chosen tapestry was used on the windows and walls. I was awed by the display of wealth.

I moved in carefully. The carpet itself was so soft. We came close to a sofa. Sethji indicated me to take a seat. I sat on the sofa and was almost sunk inside the cushion. I managed to sit upright, carefully. Soon some plates of good snacks were arranged. Sethji now came close to me. Offered the delicious snacks. I controlled my temptation. Had just a little and said, “Tell me what work I can do in your factory. What do you manufacture?”

“We manufacture gold.” Smiling Sethji murmured. “Have you understood manufacturing of GOLD?. Youngman, see. This wealth, this bungalow, this car I am having because of Gold.  Don’t you think that you also should own such luxuries?  Such a big house, a wonderful car?  Naturally, you will want to have such things. Even if you do some job for ten generations, you will not get such a comfortable living style. You can fulfill your dreams in this life, in just 5-6 years.  You can own such a bungalow, such a car if you join us. If you help us, all your worries will be taken care of. You are a young man. If you step into this business, you will have many such bungalows, many cars and all the things of your dream. Otherwise, your dreams will remain only dreams. They will never be fulfilled. “

My huge mansion, a caravan of luxury cars started appearing in front of my eyes.

“But what kind of job I will have to do?” impatiently I asked.

“I understand you have learnt French. “ Sethji said.

“Yes. I recently have acquired diploma in French” I said.

“See young man, what is your name?”

“Satish.”

“Yes Satish, so long, our partners were from countries who spoke English. We did not have any problem with them. But our new partners are from France. They do not understand English. They speak only French.  So we have problem communicating with them. Here comes your role. You act as our interpreter. Whatever we want to tell them, you translate in FRENCH and convey it to them. Whatever they speak, you translate for us. This is an important job. No mistake is tolerated.  A very crucial task! But then you will be paid also accordingly.  When the ship, fully loaded with gold biscuits comes within our vicinity, they will contact us. Immediately we will have to make further arrangements. So translating the French message is extremely important. For every successful unloading of ship, you will get” and Sethji stopped. After a pause, he continued” Can you guess, how much money you will get?”

I kept silent.

“Come on. Guess what amount you will get.”

I could not guess anything.

 “Not 5,000,Not even 10,000 but solid 25,000.

Can you imagine what all you can do with Rs.25,000?”
I was totally floored by hearing the figure.

Extremely delighted I said,” I am not a fool to reject such an offer.”

Then I got up. Sethji told the driver to drop me at my house. While I was leaving the bungalow, Sethji got up. Took out the costly wristwatch from his own wrist and put it on my hand. I looked inquisitively at Sethji.

“A small gift from me.”

“Okay then. You have to be present here tomorrow at 4 in the evening.”

“Okay Sir.” I said happily.

The driver opened the door of the car for me. I sat in the car. Noiselessly the car departed from the bungalow. After we reached my home, I told him to stop. I got off. Without making any noise the car started to return.

I looked around. Nobody noticed me. Walking briskly, I came to my house.

When entered, mother immediately asked me “Whose wrist watch have you put on?”

“Think it is mine. “

Mother said,” Do not joke. “

“My friend bought this recently. So he has given it to me for two days. I will have to return it day after tomorrow.”

“Son, You should not borrow such costly things. If they get lost, we will spend your entire life repaying.” Mother expressed her worries.

“But if I buy this?”

“To buy these costly things, one needs lot of money. We don’t have money to buy even peanuts. How can we afford this?”

Now to divert attention, I was looking for issue of LIFE.

But mother told, “Ramesh was going to library. So I returned LIFE to get some Marathi book. Ramesh got this “saying this, she handed me over a small book. I looked at the title. “SHAHID BHAGAT SINGH”.

My hand writhed. I felt uneasy. I threw the book away. Picked up the news paper. Tried to read it. But could not. Again and again Bhagat Singh’s face came in front my eyes. Tried to think of my cars, my bungalow . But BhagatSingh’s face did not move away from  eyes. The three young men embraced death to free our country. And here I am, ready to help smugglers harming our country to get out of poverty. I was ashamed of myself. I took out the wristwatch and hid it in the drawer deciding not to join the group of anti-patriotic smugglers team.

Shakuntala was holding her mother’s hand and was moving in the crowded fair which was set up in a village far away from hers. She had put on a new frock and was very excited to be in the fair where a lot of people had gathered. Many shops were set up selling a variety of toys.

There were joy rides such as giant wheel, merry go round etc. Ready- made clothes were on sale. Many stalls were also there vending eatables. Shakuntala was tempted to get some sweet eatables. She expressed her desire to her mother. Mother promised to buy her some things a little later. They were moving from shop to shop looking at different items which were displayed as mother was not able to make up her mind. The crowd was getting denser and denser. Many children had come to the fair with their parents or only with mothers as their fathers were busy earning bread for the day.

Shakuntala’s mother warned her to be extra careful and not to leave her hand. “See. The crowd is getting more and more. If you get lost in the crowd, it will be impossible to trace you. So Shaku, walk very close to me holding my hand.”

They came in front of a toy shop. Shaku told her mother to buy a small doll for her. Mother asked the shopkeeper for the price of some dolls. Shaku was already in dreamland with her doll. She was imagining playing hide and seek with the doll. But the cost was exorbitant. Mother told Shaku to wait till they find some affordable doll. Shaku was an understanding girl. She did not persist with her demand hoping to see an affordable doll in nearby shop. So they moved on. When they were in front of another toy shop, mother stopped and asked for the price of a nice small doll. She found that the price was within her budget. She told the keeper to pack that doll. Shaku was very happy and was again in dreamland playing with the doll.

And all of a sudden, there was a big commotion. Everybody started running here and there. “Fire. Run for your life. Leave the place immediately.” A stall had caught fire and big flames of fire were engulfing whatever came in their embrace. The already over-crowded fair was totally disrupted. The whole surroundings were filled with cries and screaming. A complete chaos prevailed.

India Market
Bustling market at night

Shaku could not keep herself with her mother. When everybody was running to go away from fire, Shaku was going in the direction of fire. Her mother was looking for Shaku. But the loads of crowds pushed her away and she had no control of herself. She kept shouting “Shaku……………..Shaku” but to no avail. Shaku was calling out “Aai……………A..a..i” for her mother. But she could not hear the calls. Desperately mother was searching for Shaku. Just then a big burning log of wood fell on her. Some persons rushed to save her but the fire took her in its embrace and she died instantly.

Here Shaku was crying and looking for her mother running every where. The toy shops were turned in to ashes. When Shaku came in front of the shop, she found one half burnt doll lying in one corner which Shaku picked up. She got the doll but she was not able to find her mother. Shaku was crying. Thousands of persons were around but her mother was not to be found anywhere. She cried incessantly. LAXMI an eunuch draped in lady attire noticed Shaku was crying all alone in this chaotic situation. She took pity on her. Laxmi went to Shaku and enquired about her mother. When she heard that Shaku had missed her mother, she asked her name and address so that she could be reached home. But Shakuntala could not give Laxmi her name or address of her residence as this was the first time she had come out of her house with mother from a distant village.

LAXMI looked for Shaku’s mother all around but failed to trace her. Laxmi was confused as to how to handle the situation. She consoled Shaku, told her that they would search for her mother both together. Laxmi showered motherly love on this just found child. It was getting dark then. Shakuntala’s eyes had turned dry due to continuous weeping. LAXMI gave her a vada-pav to eat. Hungry Shkuntala grabbed it and ate it hurriedly. After this she was sleepy. LAXMI took Shakuntala in her lap trying to put her to sleep. Laxmi felt the emotions of a mother springing up from within. She imagined of her own child in her lap even though she knew that she could not bear a child in this birth. Now she was in love with this child. Laxmi was afraid of finding the child’s mother. It occurred to her that as soon as this child found her own mother, it would leave her instantly and go away with mother to her own house. Laxmi hoped that this child stayed with her. That would change her life entirely. She prayed to God that the child’s mother should not be found. And God answered her prayers.

Waiting till it got completely dark and the commotion had calmed down, LAXMI gave up her search for the child’s mother and brought Shakuntala to her house, a hutment in the corner of the village. In the night only she wound up her belongings and left the village where everybody knew her as a eunuch. Under the cover of darkness she proceeded to another village where nobody would know her sex identity. She carried the child with her giving the child a new identity as her own child acting as widowed father.

In the morning Laxmi dressed as a man and introduced himself as Shaku’s father. He tried convincing Shaku that her biological mother was dead in the fire and now he would take care of her as her father. Shakuntala refused to talk to Laxmi. But after a couple of days, Shakuntala experienced the affection of Laxmi as father. Slowly Shaku accepted the food cooked by Laxmi. One morning Laxmi asked her how he should call her. Shaku told Laxmi “my mother used to call me SHAKUNTALA. You may call me Shaku.”

Laxmi told Shaku that the next day he would take her to a school. He warned her that she had to go to school and study hard. She should become an educated lady.

Next day Laxmi took Shaku to the nearby school and admitted her in the name of Shakuntala and herself as Shaku’s father.

Shakuntala’s new life started going to school. Laxmi looked after Shaku very well. He provided her with clothes, school books and offered her food cooked with full affection.

Slowly, Shakuntala forgot about her own mother and Laxmi too forgot about her sexual deficiency. But Shakuntala used to feel odd about her father Laxmi. She used to find that Laxmi was not a normal man. Nevertheless she loved Laxmi very much.

The days passed into months and months passed into years. Shakuntala turned into a brilliant student. Passed her school exams with excellent marks. She even came first in school in the board examination. She was so happy that from school she went home running and held Laxmi with both the hands.

“Baba, I am so happy. I stood first in school. You will have to accompany me to school to receive the prize. Our Principal has told me to bring the parents to the function of prize distribution. You are coming to school with me.”

“Oh. I am so glad. We will buy a new frock for you. You wear that and go for prize distribution. I will not come. I am not feeling well.” Shakuntala was disappointed. But she knew why Laxmi was not ready to come to school with her. She knew Laxmi was not like the father of her friends. He was different from other men.

She entered the college for further studies. Laxmi acting as a man, fulfilled all the duties as father. Laxmi took some labourer job and ensured that Shakuntala did not face shortage of money for college studies. Shakuntala completed her graduation and then joined a company as an executive. The father and daughter binding of love got stronger day by day. Now Shakuntala insisted that Laxmi stopped working and manage the house and take full rest at home.

And one day Shakuntala brought one of her friends home to introduce to her father. Prakash was a very cultured young man working in her office. Shakuntala introduced her father to Prakash.

“Baba, this is my friend Prakash. He is working in my company.”

“Nice to meet you Baba.” Prakash said.

“I am also happy to meet you. Where do you stay?” Laxmi answered in his hoarse voice.

Prakash was a bit upset over Laxmi’s voice and manner of speaking. He found Shakuntala’s father’s behaviour a little odd. He felt her father resembled a eunuch. But Prakash did not make his impressions very apparent.

“Shaku is a nice girl. We know each other for quite some time. I want to marry her. We want your permission for that. “

“Do you really love her?” Laxmi asked.

“Yes. I love her very much. I will keep her happy throughout our life.” Prakash opened his heart out.

Laxmi delighted by Prakash’s seeking permission, whole heartedly gave his consent.

And one day Shakuntala and Prakash were married. Laxmi performed the KANYADAAN of Shakuntala and got a heavenly pleasure. Laxmi felt very happy that despite her different sexual orientation, she could get the opportunity of doing kanyadaan.

After Shakuntala left her present house to move into another house to stay with Prakash, LAXMI felt terribly lonely. He could not bear the separation from his daughter. Moreover, he had sensed that Prakash had suspected his sexual orientation as male. Laxmi did not want any trouble in Shakuntala’s life due to his different sexual orientation. He decided to end his life.

One evening Shakuntala received a sad news of her father committing suicide. Shakuntala was very upset. She remembered Laxmi’s sacrifices for her education. She recollected how her father had suffered for her bringing up a better way. She missed her father very badly.

Shakuntala’s married life was going very satisfactorily. And one day she disclosed to Prakash that he was going to be a father very soon. Both of them were very happy.

But one morning Shakuntala got up very upset. Prakash noticed that. He asked for the reason. Shakuntala said, “I had very bad dream. In my dream my father came and smilingly he announced that he is going to take rebirth as my child.”

“But is not that good? Your father is taking rebirth as our child. That means we are going to get a boy. I am very happy.”

Shakuntala thought “only if my father was my real father, I also would have been happy. But actually my father was a eunuch. He just brought me up.” She appealed to her father,” My dear father, I love you very much. I always remember you. But I do not want your rebirth as my child. I do not want an eunuch as my child.”

{This story is based on the Indian assumption of a person after his death taking rebirth at his will and with the same gender as before.}

It is pitch dark. I am lost. The end of road does not seem to be within reach. I am walking on and on. Can not even feel any sign of life. I am alone. Dragging myself in totally uncertain direction. Nobody to tell me where I am, which direction to go. A big mountain can be sensed nearby. The path which I am following is zigzag and not trodden. But I am moving on. I am tired. Very exhausted. But still I am going on.

And all of a sudden I see a dim light far away in a small hut. My hopes get rekindled. I move in the direction of hut. Everything is still. Only my dragging feet are making sound. I come closer to hut. No movement in the hut. I peep from the window. I am surprised to see an old man, a very old man sitting in front of a burning log of wood. He moves his head and notices me peeping from the window. He does not move any further. I look for the door and enter the hut. Few vessels with cooked food are near the fire. The old man does not utter a word. I am confused. Again I am in two minds whether to sit or not to. He takes out some food in a plate and offers me. He can make out that I am very tired and very hungry. “I am trying to reach the peak of mountain. But I have lost my way” saying this I sit in front of him. He moves the plate with food towards me. I start gulping every morsel that I take.

“Got tired? Lost courage? All aspiration to reach your target is dried up?”

I do not say anything.

“You are not the first one to have come here. Numerous have taken halt here and proceeded further.

Many with very big dreams to achieve, start their journey with all their might. They continue for some time. Their friends, close relatives try to dissuade them. But their desire, determination is so strong that they overcome all the resistance, all the hurdles coming in the way and they keep on their way to reach their goal. But the journey is not smooth. Many of them lose their way. Still they continue. They get tired. Exhausted. Nowhere to take rest. No one to consult. No one to guide. No one to help. And they lose their courage. They try to gather some energy to move on. But they fail. As a last resort they hope for some miracle to take place. They expect some unknown power to come to their help. They become so helpless that instead of walking on the path which they have chosen, they wait helplessly for some unknown power to take them to their goal. But it does not happen. They wait on and on and on. But nothing comes their way. They get disappointed. Disheartened. With the last ray of hope they keep waiting at the point where they have reached.

Finally they give up. They lose all their hopes. They are out of strength. And no more enthusiasm is left to attempt any further to achieve their goal.”

“At this time many change their direction, head backwards to their start point. They try to be at their comfort zone. But few have some mental stamina left with them. They locate this hut. Come here and rest for a little while. Work out their plan for further action and move on their path of goal. They put in all their effort to reach their target.

And they do achieve their goal. These very few people get their energy required to move further, to conquer the peak they have planned to reach.

I am glad that in that extremely exhausted condition, you located this hut. Now with renewed enthusiasm you will move further and faster. And certainly you will achieve whatever you have decided to achieve.”

Saying this, the old man gets up, walks slowly to the door, goes out and disappears in the dark.

Now  fully rejuvenated, I get up and come out. I see it is dawn. Sky is slowly getting brighter. I can see the path I plan to take. The peak that I want to conquer is within sight. I start walking on the path. Again there is nobody with me. But I am walking firmly with full enthusiasm. The pace of walking is increased.

Very soon the sun rises and makes the surroundings clear. I can see myself to have come up so high, away from my start point. I am thrilled. Very little to walk and I will be very close to the summit.

I take a few steps and move further. And I find myself at the top, at the peak. I am ecstatic.

Your fist was closed when you were born.

In tender days of childhood, you captured lot of innocence in your fist

Following youth you tried to grasp the entire world with the strength of your fist.

And in the final phase of journey, there is nothing for you to cling to.

You have to open your clasp to give away everything that you gathered.

And finally the fist will remain open while leaving this world.

Philosophers say “When love reigns, the impossible may be attained”

See here.

When Neah was trekking in India, Eric was skiing in U.S.

While Neah was taking delight in wild life sanctuaries in India, Eric was adoring marine life in U.S.

When Neah was cycling in India, Eric was enjoying diving in U.S.

When they both met in Buffalo, they shared their hobbies.

Instead of staring at each other, they started looking in the same direction.

The result – a classic amalgamation, an ideal mixture of two souls that has united two families.

I read somewhere that love is a friendship that has caught fire.

May their fire stay strong and bright and filled with love for the rest of their life.

O princess of my dream
Will you meet me in reality
Will you open up your feelings

Crowding in your mind
I have always appeared in
The picture you imagined
Which you have been seeing
Day and night

I am confused  watching
Inscrutable movement of your eyes
I hesitate to hold you actually
Close to my heart

I want to take you as my queen and
Place you in my heart sharing
The tenderness of my emotions
To get through sprightly life

We will laugh together
We will cry together
We will be completely united

To live the life together.
Let us break the shackles of
Dreams.  Imagination
And come out in real world
Holding each other

7> In the movie, the white community members consider themselves superior to dark people. That point is discussed at length. In fact, that is the main point of drama.

Here 40-50 years ago the Americans looked down upon Indians.  But today the scenario is different. Both the countries have realized the common points between them. Both countries are democracies. Americans have realized that Indians are no less intelligent.
